In a significant move to restructure its operations, Lucid Motors has announced the layoff of approximately 1,500 employees, representing 18% of its workforce. This decision comes just four months after the company reduced its staff by 12%. The electric vehicle manufacturer has also discontinued its second shift of production at its Arizona factory. According to Lucid Motors, the cuts are part of a strategic effort by new CEO Silvio Napoli to simplify the company's structure, enhance execution, and boost competitiveness.

The layoffs coincide with a slowdown in the US electric vehicle market, with several major automakers reevaluating their electric model lineups. Notably, Marc Winterhoff, the former interim CEO, has left the company, and his previously announced role as chief operating officer has been eliminated. As Lucid Motors prepares to launch its mass-market Lucid Cosmos SUV later this year, the company is focusing on achieving profitability. Additionally, Lucid is exploring opportunities in the autonomous vehicle space through partnerships with Uber and Nuro.

The recent staff reduction is expected to yield annualized savings of around $158 million, with the restructuring process slated for completion by the third quarter of this year. The company will provide approximately $32 million in severance packages to affected employees.
