STOCKHOLM—Lovable.dev, the Swedish startup that transforms English descriptions into working software, now carries a $6.6 billion price tag. Founded in late 2023, the company’s rapid ascent is a defining story of the current AI boom. A $330 million investment round in December 2025, led by Alphabet’s CapitalG and Menlo Ventures, solidified a valuation that had more than tripled in under half a year.
The platform, built on models from OpenAI and Anthropic, claims over 8 million users and $200 million in annual revenue. It has become a favorite for quickly testing ideas, with clients like Klarna and Uber using it to shrink prototype development from weeks to hours. CEO Anton Osika, who previously created the open-source GPT Engineer, promotes Lovable as a comprehensive solution for building and deploying applications.
However, the very speed that made it popular is now under scrutiny. Users report significant difficulties when projects move beyond early prototypes. Complaints circulate about AI-generated code that gets stuck in error loops, inefficient use of paid credits, and challenges in implementing complex logic. Independent reviews note that security protocols and data handling can feel underdeveloped for serious commercial use.
The company’s terms of service, while granting users ownership of their applications, include stark limitations. Liability is capped, and the platform disclaims responsibility for errors in AI output. Some users have reported unexpected migrations of their backend systems to Lovable’s proprietary cloud, raising concerns about vendor lock-in.
Lovable has responded to early security criticisms by implementing new scanners and pursuing industry certifications. Osika states the company is committed to making it "the most secure place to build." Yet, as rivals like Replit and Cursor sharpen their offerings, Lovable must demonstrate that its approach can support large-scale, production-ready software. The substantial investment is a vote of confidence, but the real test—transitioning from a phenomenal prototyping tool to a reliable engine for enterprise development—is still underway.
