In a significant shift, Lamborghini has officially canceled its planned electric SUV, the Lanzador. The decision, confirmed by CEO Stephan Winkelmann, marks a strategic retreat from a fully electric future for the brand, at least for now. The project, which had been in development for several years, was terminated in late 2025.
The move stems from a fundamental challenge: Lamborghini's core customers, who spend vast sums on vehicles that are expressions of passion and theater, have shown little interest in purely electric powertrains. While electric motors deliver immense speed, they lack the sensory drama—the roar, the vibration, the mechanical fury—that defines the supercar experience for these buyers. Engineering that emotional intensity into a silent EV, Winkelmann suggests, proved an insurmountable task.
'Investing heavily in full-EV development when the market and customer base are not ready would be an expensive hobby, and financially irresponsible,' Winkelmann told the Sunday Times. The company, part of the Volkswagen Group, has the technical resources but sees no viable market.
Instead of pursuing the Lanzador, Lamborghini will focus its efforts on expanding its lineup of plug-in hybrid models, which combine electrification with traditional combustion engines. This path allows the brand to meet evolving regulations while preserving the visceral character its clientele demands. For the foreseeable future, the signature sound of a Lamborghini will not be a synthetic speaker note, but the rumble of an engine.
