King Charles will press senior figures from Nvidia, OpenAI and Anthropic on AI safety at a summit in Scotland on Thursday, Buckingham Palace has said.
The gathering will examine how AI can be used to benefit society and the natural world, and will include talks on a shared set of principles for developing the technology.
According to speech excerpts shared with CNBC, the king will say: "The development of AI - its substance and its pace - are both intriguing and deeply concerning in equal measure." He will add that those who value humanity "are anxiously seeking your reassurance that we will not lose control of our destiny."
Charles will also host senior representatives from Google DeepMind, U.K. AI minister Kanishka Narayan, and other attendees convened by the King's Trust, the King's Foundation and the Sustainable Markets Initiative. The Palace said he will ask participants about harnessing AI with safety "at its heart" and building international cooperation and consensus.
"The decisions taken at this formative time will shape the world inherited by future generations," Charles will say. "And so, the task before you is not merely to advance technology, but to ensure that it remains firmly in the service of humanity, community and the natural world."
The king gave virtual remarks at the U.K.'s AI Safety Summit in 2023, describing the moment as "one of the greatest technological leaps in history of human endeavour."
Debate over AI safety has intensified in the past two weeks, with OpenAI's Sam Altman, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, Google DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis and Elon Musk showing rare agreement in urging a slowdown in development and regulatory oversight. Others, including U.S. President Donald Trump, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg and Nvidia's Jensen Huang, have pushed back against more regulation.
AI pioneers have also warned of potentially catastrophic risks tied to these systems. In Washington, some lawmakers from both parties have backed bills to check AI's progress, while Trump on Monday raged against growing calls for regulation.
