The breakneck pace at which artificial intelligence technology is spreading and evolving is unprecedented - and it carries real risks for the economy, InfoWatch group president Natalya Kasperskaya has warned, according to TASS.
As an example, she described a case in which two people used AI to recreate software closely resembling Microsoft Office and Adobe within a single day. The AI could not replicate every function, but the results were still of a fairly high standard.
Kasperskaya called such cases an alarming sign. If AI development keeps its current tempo, entire industries could be put at risk. "What if we then have to shut down the software field altogether, because everything will be written by artificial intelligence very quickly?" the expert asked.
Under that scenario, many employees could lose their jobs in the medium term. For now, though, it is premature to speak of such risks, given the less-than-encouraging results of companies developing AI models. Those firms, Kasperskaya noted, are not currently demonstrating a viable economic model - and "possibly they won't."
The troubles of AI developers are reflected in a wave of share sell-offs among leading tech corporations. The worrying trend hit the US stock market in late October amid disappointing financial results from industry giants including Intel, Amazon, Alphabet and Meta (designated extremist and banned in Russia). Analysts say the rush to lend for AI development has largely driven the dynamic, and the hefty investments have yet to pay off.
