Jane Street Bets $6 Billion on CoreWeave's AI Infrastructure

In a move that underscores the financial sector's deepening investment in artificial intelligence, quantitative trading firm Jane Street has entered a $6 billion agreement with CoreWeave. The deal, announced Wednesday, will see the trading firm utilize CoreWeave's specialized cloud infrastructure to fuel its trading algorithms and research initiatives. As part of the arrangement, Jane Street also acquired $1 billion of CoreWeave stock. CoreWeave's shares traded slightly higher following the news.

This partnership arrives just days after CoreWeave confirmed a separate infrastructure agreement with AI developer Anthropic, maker of the Claude models. The back-to-back announcements signal robust demand for the company's services. CoreWeave's trajectory is notable: founded in 2017 as a cryptocurrency mining operation called Atlantic Crypto, it began transitioning to AI cloud infrastructure in 2019, well ahead of the broader industry's pivot.

Analysts at Bernstein describe CoreWeave as a leader in the 'neocloud' sector—providers whose infrastructure is engineered around the powerful graphics processors (GPUs) required for AI workloads, rather than the standard processors used for traditional web hosting and applications. The firm's early shift has given it a substantial head start. Bernstein's research indicates that, compared to similar providers, CoreWeave possesses 'by far the strongest commercial machine,' supported by a blend of long-term contracts and on-demand services. The company claims nine of the top ten AI model developers now use its platform, positioning it at the center of the current AI build-out.
