Jack Dorsey Proposes a Radical Overhaul: AI as the Organizational Spine

Block co-founder Jack Dorsey is proposing a fundamental shift in how companies are structured, suggesting artificial intelligence should replace the traditional role of middle management. This vision, detailed in a recent blog post co-authored with lead independent director Roelof Botha, arrives weeks after Block reduced its workforce by approximately 4,000 employees—a move Dorsey linked directly to the company's accelerated AI strategy.

Dorsey and Botha argue that hierarchical human coordination is too slow for the modern pace of business. They envision a company built as a unified intelligence, where AI systems continuously track projects, allocate resources, and identify problems in real-time. This model, they suggest, moves beyond simply giving employees AI assistants to instead reinvent the corporate framework itself.

"We intend to replace what the hierarchy does," they wrote. "We're after a company built as an intelligence."

The plan does not eliminate human roles but redefines them. Remaining staff would be categorized as individual contributors, problem-solving 'directly responsible individuals,' or 'player-coaches' who both mentor and perform hands-on work. People would retain authority over major business and ethical choices.

This proposal follows a pattern in the tech sector, where AI is increasingly cited as a driver for organizational change. Notably, Block has rehired some of the employees let go in February, indicating a period of turbulent transition as the theory is put into practice.

Dorsey and Botha are betting that this model of AI as organizational core will eventually influence companies far beyond their own. "It will reshape how companies of all kinds operate over the coming years," they concluded.
