Israel Bets Big on Homegrown AI with New National Supercomputer

Israel is staking a major claim in the global artificial intelligence race. The country, long celebrated for its startup culture, has officially launched a national AI supercomputer powered by 1,000 of Nvidia's latest B200 GPUs. The system is a direct government-backed effort to keep Israeli innovation onshore and competitive.

Operated through the Israel Innovation Authority, the machine will offer subsidized computing power to local tech firms and academic institutions. The goal is straightforward: stop Israeli companies and researchers from having to rent expensive capacity from foreign cloud giants. "This is about maintaining our edge," said Dror Bin, CEO of the Authority, emphasizing the project's strategic nature.

Access is reserved for serious projects. Companies must commit to using at least 16 accelerators for one to six months, while academic teams need a minimum of eight. This ensures the substantial resources—70% of which are earmarked for industry, 30% for academia—are directed toward meaningful work.

The move addresses a critical bottleneck. For years, Israeli AI ventures have faced prohibitive costs to train large models. This domestic solution, built and run by Nebius with an investment of approximately $130 million, aims to change that calculus. It builds on Israel's existing strength in AI startups, which a recent global study ranked as the world's top emerging hub.

The supercomputer's backbone features technology with deep local ties. Nvidia's significant Israeli engineering teams contributed to core components within the system. This launch coincides with broader governmental pushes to implement AI across public services and follows the signing of a formal AI partnership with the United States in 2025, the first such agreement of the Biden-Harris administration.

For a nation known as the 'Startup Nation,' this infrastructure represents a calculated upgrade. It provides the foundational horsepower for the next wave of innovation, aiming to ensure that future AI breakthroughs bear a 'Made in Israel' stamp.
