In a bid to expand its reach and increase user engagement, Instagram has unveiled a series of new features for its smart TV app. The updates, which include support for vertical Reels, disappearing Stories, and horizontal videos, are designed to encourage users to spend more time on the platform from the comfort of their living rooms. Instagram's pivot to TV is a strategic move to compete with YouTube and other microdrama platforms, which have gained significant traction in recent years. The company's goal is to create a more immersive experience that can be shared with others in the same room, rather than just being a solo activity on a phone.

While some features, such as casting Reels from a phone to a TV, make sense, others, like watching Stories on a widescreen display, may not be as intuitive. Instagram is also testing a dedicated section for widescreen content and plans to develop longform, episodic series with creators. This move is seen as an attempt to capture a share of the booming microdrama market, which is estimated to reach $14 billion by the end of the year. However, Instagram's success in this space will depend on its ability to convince creators to produce high-quality, TV-focused content that can sustain viewers' attention for more than a few minutes.

If executed well, this pivot could pay off, but if not, it may end up being another instance of Instagram chasing its competitors without gaining significant traction.
