At its sprawling Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, Tesla is quietly preparing a manufacturing gamble that could reshape the company. According to plans detailed by Business Insider, the automaker is carving out space for a dedicated assembly line to build its Cybercab, a two-seat robotaxi with no steering wheel or pedals. The goal is to start volume production next year.
This move signals a profound shift. Tesla is evolving from a company that sells cars to one aiming to operate its own autonomous ride-hailing network. The Cybercab, first shown in late 2024, is designed exclusively for this purpose, to be summoned via an app. Its simplified design allows for a new manufacturing approach Tesla calls "unboxed," where large sections of the vehicle are built in parallel. The company claims this will cut costs and speed up assembly, targeting a production price under $30,000 per vehicle.
Yet, immense challenges remain. Tesla's vision depends on its camera-based "Full Self-Driving" software achieving flawless, government-approved autonomy—a hurdle it has yet to clear after years of promises. Competitor Waymo already operates commercial driverless services in several cities using a different, more expensive sensor suite. Regulatory approval for a vehicle without traditional controls is another significant barrier, with state and federal rules still in flux.
Analysts are divided. Some see a trillion-dollar opportunity; others point to Tesla's missed timelines and the operational complexity of running a fleet. If successful, the Cybercab would transform Tesla into a mobility service, generating recurring revenue from rides. The 2026 production target is ambitious, but the larger bet—on software, regulation, and public trust—remains untested. The new line in Austin is just the first step in a much longer race.
