Indonesia and Russia Strengthen Economic Ties Through Strategic Partnerships

In a significant move to bolster their economic relationship, Indonesia and Russia are poised to switch to payments in national currencies, marking a new era of cooperation between the two nations. As Indonesia prepares to take on the role of partner country at the INNOPROM-2026 international industrial exhibition in Yekaterinburg, the country's Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, has outlined the potential benefits of a free trade agreement between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). This agreement is expected to 'change the rules of the game' for businesses, enabling Indonesia to tap into the vast markets of the EAEU and vice versa. The partnership is also likely to pave the way for increased cooperation in the development of Indonesia's industrial sector, with Russia's expertise in energy, technology, and industry set to play a crucial role.

Furthermore, the two countries are exploring opportunities for joint projects in the production of critical minerals, such as nickel and cobalt, which are essential for the manufacture of electric vehicles. By strengthening their economic ties, Indonesia and Russia aim to reduce their dependence on traditional global supply chains and promote a more balanced and mutually beneficial partnership.
