IBM shares jumped 8% late Tuesday after the company reported fourth-quarter results that handily beat analyst forecasts. The strong performance, driven by significant demand for its artificial intelligence software and mainframe systems, signals a successful transformation for the 113-year-old technology firm.
For the quarter ending December 2025, revenue rose 12% to $19.69 billion. Adjusted earnings came in at $4.52 per share. Both figures exceeded Wall Street's predictions. For the full year 2025, net income more than doubled to $5.6 billion, and free cash flow reached $14.7 billion.
Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna said the results capped a strong year where IBM exceeded expectations. The company's strategic pivot is clear: software revenue, now nearly half of total sales, grew 14% to $9 billion. The infrastructure unit, powered by a 67% surge in IBM Z mainframe sales, saw revenue leap 21% to $5.1 billion.
A key highlight was the company's generative AI business, which now has a bookings backlog exceeding $12.5 billion. This reflects a move by corporate clients from testing chatbots to deploying governed, large-scale AI systems using IBM's watsonx platform.
Looking ahead to 2026, IBM projected revenue growth above 5% and an additional $1 billion in free cash flow. The board also increased its quarterly dividend, continuing a streak of shareholder payouts that has lasted over a century. The company's recent $11 billion agreement to acquire data-streaming firm Confluent is aimed at strengthening its AI infrastructure for enterprise clients.
While competition from cloud providers remains, IBM's hybrid approach—mixing on-premises systems with cloud services—continues to find a steady market in finance, government, and other regulated industries prioritizing data control.
