Huntington Ingalls Turns to Adaptive Robots to Address Shipyard Labor Shortage

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), the nation's premier military shipbuilder, is installing AI-driven robotic systems from GrayMatter Robotics in its Virginia and Mississippi yards. This move is a practical attempt to tackle a chronic shortage of skilled labor, a problem the Pentagon considers a direct threat to national security.

The systems will handle surface preparation—grinding, sanding, and painting—on aircraft carriers and submarines. These jobs are strenuous, hazardous, and hard to fill. GrayMatter's technology uses machine learning and sensors to adjust to the unique, uneven surfaces of a ship's hull, a task where pre-programmed robots typically fail.

For HII, this isn't about futuristic experimentation. It's a necessary calculation. The company, along with the broader U.S. naval industrial base, cannot find enough workers. Construction programs for critical vessels like the Columbia-class submarine are delayed, in part, due to these shortages. If human workers aren't available, machines must take on some of the load.

GrayMatter's scanners create real-time 3D maps of the work area, allowing its robots to operate without detailed pre-programming for each part. HII leadership states the goal is to reassign people from grueling prep work to higher-skill trades like welding and electrical installation, where expertise is even scarcer.

The deployment begins with pilot programs. Success in the chaotic, physically demanding shipyard environment is not guaranteed. Yet, the underlying pressure is undeniable: with China's shipbuilding output vastly exceeding America's, finding ways to build more with fewer people is no longer optional. The entire defense industry will be watching to see if this AI can hold up under the torch smoke and grind.
