Google announced a significant expansion of its Gemini AI within its core productivity applications this week. The update introduces a suite of new features for Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive, moving these tools from simple document editors toward proactive, context-aware assistants.

The changes are designed to keep work flowing within a user's existing ecosystem. A new "Help me create" function in Docs can produce formatted first drafts by pulling relevant data from a user's Gmail, Drive, and Chat history based on a simple instruction. Users can then refine sections or unify disparate writing styles without starting over. Docs also gains a "Match the format" tool, allowing Gemini to replicate the structure of a preferred template and populate it with personal details extracted from emails and other files.

In Sheets, Gemini now acts as a data partner. A prompt like "organize my move to Chicago" can trigger the creation of formatted checklists and trackers compiled from information scattered across a user's inbox. A "Fill with Gemini" tool can categorize data or pull real-time figures from the web to populate tables automatically.

For presentations, Slides can generate new, on-theme slides drawn from a user's files and the internet, with instructions to adjust design elements on command. Google also reimagined Drive, topping search results with AI Overviews that summarize file contents and adding an "Ask Gemini in Drive" feature for complex, cross-document queries.

These features are available in beta starting today, first for Google's AI Ultra and Pro subscribers. Docs, Sheets, and Slides support is worldwide in English, with Drive functionality initially launching in the United States.
