In a significant shift, Google is set to introduce changes to its app store billing system worldwide, effective next week. The move marks a departure from the traditional 30 percent flat fee, instead adopting a more nuanced approach with lower, decoupled fees. This change will enable users to pay developers directly for Android apps, potentially reducing the revenue share for Google. The new fee structure will vary depending on factors such as the user's initial install date, the developer's earnings, and their choice of billing system.
For high-earning apps, the rate will be 20 percent for new in-app purchases and 10 percent for subscriptions. Additionally, Google has launched the Games Level Up and Apps Experience programs, which offer lower rates for developers that create exceptional, cross-platform experiences with features like cloud saves and phishing-resistant sign-ins. These programs aim to incentivize developers to create high-quality, user-friendly apps. While some program changes will take effect later this year, the new billing structure will roll out globally after September 30th, 2027, marking a new era for app developers and Google's app store policies.
