A significant update is coming to Google Home, promising to reduce misidentifications by smart home cameras. As of June 23rd, the facial recognition feature will be expanded to incorporate additional non-biometric signals, such as body size and clothing color, to identify individuals even when their faces are not clearly visible. This means that Google's smart home AI will be able to use contextual clues, like the color of someone's clothing, to recognize and distinguish between household members. The Familiar Faces library will also receive automatic updates with the latest images, minimizing the likelihood of outdated examples triggering inaccurate notifications.

Furthermore, the AI-generated video event descriptions will now be able to detect and describe specific sounds, including dogs barking, alarms, or footsteps, even if the audio source is off-camera. These enhancements address some of the inconsistencies reported in Google's updated smart home system, such as event logs with incorrect descriptions. Additionally, the latest Google Home app update, version 4. 20, introduces new features like System Health alerts for Nest thermostat issues and improved support for Matter switches, underscoring Google's commitment to refining its smart home ecosystem.
