Google is significantly expanding the presence of its Gemini AI assistant within its core productivity applications. A suite of new features, now arriving for Google Workspace and dedicated AI plan subscribers, embeds Gemini's capabilities directly into the workflow of Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive.
In Google Docs, a persistent Gemini chat window now appears at the bottom of the screen. Users can describe the document they need, and Gemini will draft and format it by pulling context from the web, Drive, Gmail, and Chat. A new 'Match writing style' tool can analyze a collaborator's text and rewrite selections to fit the document's tone. All AI suggestions remain private until approved by the user.
The integration extends to Sheets, where Gemini can now generate complete spreadsheets from a description, using data from a user's files and the internet. It can also populate columns with specific information, like company financials, and assist with complex tasks such as optimizing staff schedules.
For Slides, Gemini can generate individual slides, inserting copy and applying consistent formatting automatically. Google indicated the ability to create entire presentations from a prompt is forthcoming.
Perhaps the most strategic shift is in Google Drive. The platform is gaining AI Overviews for natural language searches, surfacing relevant documents or answering questions with citations. A new 'Ask Gemini in Drive' feature lets users query information across their stored files, emails, and chats. Google emphasizes these tools maintain the enterprise-grade data protections standard across Workspace.
Yulie Kwon Kim, Google's VP of product for Workspace, stated the goal is to place Gemini 'in the places where people work,' eliminating the need to switch to a separate application. The updates are currently rolling out in English to eligible subscribers.
