In a significant internal shift, Google has moved its advanced robotics software unit, Intrinsic, from Alphabet's experimental 'Other Bets' portfolio directly into Google's core operations. The move, confirmed this week, signals a tightening of focus on artificial intelligence that can interact with the physical world.
Intrinsic, launched as a standalone venture in 2021, develops software intended to simplify robot programming and operation. Its goal has been to create a universal platform for robotics, akin to an operating system for machines. The unit will now operate as a distinct group inside Google, where it will collaborate directly with the Google DeepMind AI research team. This integration provides Intrinsic with direct access to Google's Gemini AI models and substantial cloud computing infrastructure.
The consolidation follows a broader pattern within Alphabet. In 2023, DeepMind absorbed another robotics division, Everyday Robots. Last year, the same team released AI models designed to improve how robots execute physical tasks. Bringing Intrinsic under the Google umbrella suggests a strategic effort to unify and accelerate these physical AI initiatives, moving them from long-term research toward more tangible products and applications.
Financial terms of the internal transfer were not disclosed. A company statement indicated that Intrinsic's mission remains unchanged, but its path to market will now be powered by Google's central resources.
