Google Cloud and Accenture have formed a joint unit aimed at embedding engineers inside enterprises to help them adopt Google's AI tools and services more effectively.

The group, called Accenture Gemini Enterprise Business Group, is Google's latest push into the competitive field of "forward-deployed engineers" (FDEs). Rivals including OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Amazon have all recently launched similar business units, betting that implementing AI models can become its own trillion-dollar business.

As part of the deal, Google will train up to 1,000 Accenture FDEs to build custom AI applications on the Gemini Enterprise platform. The organization will operate under Accenture, according to a Google spokesperson. The Wall Street Journal first reported the unit.

The move comes as hyperscalers commit hundreds of billions of dollars annually to GPUs, data centers, and power capacity, while revenue directly tied to AI remains a fraction of that investment. Google Cloud generated $24.8 billion in the second quarter, much of it driven by enterprise AI, but Alphabet reportedly held $811 billion in purchase commitments and contractual obligations as of June 30.

According to August data from Ramp, Google accounts for roughly 6% of enterprise AI spending among Ramp's U.S. customers, compared to Anthropic's 43.5% and OpenAI's 39.7%. A Google spokesperson noted that many of Ramp's customers exclude major enterprises signing large strategic AI deals with Google Cloud.

Earlier this year, Google Cloud launched a $750 million partner ecosystem commitment embedding its own FDEs across consultancies including Capgemini, Cognizant, and Deloitte, and struck a multi-year partnership with CVC Capital Partners to deploy FDEs into portfolio companies. Accenture has also launched FDE programs with Microsoft, ServiceNow, and SAP this year.
