Google is applying a familiar strategy to a new frontier. This week, the company announced it is bringing Intrinsic, its robotics software unit, into its core operations. The move signals a major commitment to making Intrinsic’s technology the foundational layer for industrial robots, much as Android became the underlying system for countless smartphones.
Intrinsic develops an operating system that allows manufacturers to program robots from companies like FANUC and KUKA without deep technical expertise. Its goal is to simplify the process, letting engineers concentrate on specific tasks rather than low-level coding. The platform, Flowstate, enables the creation of robotic applications through a web interface, minimizing traditional programming.
The shift comes as artificial intelligence rapidly advances from digital applications into the physical world. In 2025, Google introduced Gemini Robotics models designed to generate action commands for machines. The company has since formed partnerships with robotics firms like Apptronik and, notably, reunited with Boston Dynamics to integrate Gemini into Atlas humanoid robots for manufacturing.
By moving Intrinsic in-house, the unit gains direct access to Google's AI models, cloud infrastructure, and the research team at DeepMind. Intrinsic CEO Wendy Tan White noted that Google CEO Sundar Pichai has drawn a direct parallel to the company's past success, calling the project "the Android of robotics."
Google's history in robotics has been uneven, marked by acquisitions and subsequent sales in the past decade. However, the current AI surge has reframed the opportunity. A 2025 Deloitte survey found 80% of manufacturing executives plan to significantly invest in smart factory technologies. Intrinsic is already deploying its systems, partnering with Foxconn to use AI robots in U.S. electronics assembly plants.
As demand for automation and AI compute hardware soars, Google is positioning Intrinsic not just as another project, but as a potential cornerstone for the next generation of industrial work.
