In a significant development, Getty Images has announced a multi-year partnership with OpenAI, allowing the AI company to access its vast library of licensed content. This collaboration will enable OpenAI to display Getty's images in its search results and ChatGPT, enhancing the user experience with high-quality, trustworthy visual content. According to Getty CEO Craig Peters, the integration of licensed visual content is essential for making AI-powered search and discovery more useful and reliable. This partnership marks a notable shift in Getty's approach to working with AI companies, as it had previously taken a cautious stance.
In the past, Getty had banned AI-generated art from its library and even sued Stability AI for alleged copyright violations. However, the company has since launched its own generative AI tool and partnered with Perplexity AI to provide licensed content for its search and discovery tools. The terms of the deal with OpenAI have not been disclosed, including whether Getty's images will be used in AI training. Nevertheless, this partnership is expected to provide ChatGPT users with richer visual experiences, while also promoting the use of licensed imagery and respecting the rights of content creators.
