Indian AI coding startup Emergent has rocketed to unicorn status, closing a $130 million Series C round that values the company at $1.5 billion. That marks a fivefold increase in just six months, underscoring the white-hot demand for tools that let anyone build software without a computer science degree. The round was led by private equity firm Creaegis, with participation from new investors MNI Ventures-Claypond and Sentinel Global, alongside existing backers Khosla Ventures, SoftBank's Vision Fund 2, Lightspeed, and Y Combinator. Total funding now stands at $230 million, up from a $70 million Series B in January that valued the startup at $300 million.
While competitors like Lovable, Replit, and Cursor chase developer dollars, Emergent is carving a different path. The startup targets entrepreneurs and small to midsize businesses that still run operations on spreadsheets and email. Co-founder and CEO Mukund Jha describes the product as "an engineering team in a box" - a platform that handles not just coding, but deployment, hosting, testing, and debugging. The bet is paying off: Emergent has hit a $120 million annual run-rate revenue, up 70% in four months, and counts over 200,000 paying customers. Clients range from trucking firms building shipment trackers to property managers creating internal CRM tools. North America and Europe each account for about a third of revenue, while India contributes roughly 9%.
Jha acknowledges that design is a weak spot - many AI-built websites look alike - but the company is pouring fresh capital into product development, including improving application success rates and supporting more complex AI workflows with local and open-source models. Emergent also plans to open a European office and expand its San Francisco team by 30 to 40 people by year-end. Founded just last June by Mukund and his brother Madhav (CTO), the startup now employs about 200 people, mostly in Bengaluru. With its focus on non-technical builders, Emergent is positioning itself as the go-to platform for the next wave of entrepreneurs - no coding required.
