Fremantle, the independent production powerhouse behind global formats like 'American Idol,' has released the first project from its dedicated AI unit, Imaginae Studios. The short-form series, titled 'Art Awakens,' employs generative AI to animate six famous paintings, constructing narrative worlds within each frame.

The episodes bring motion to static masterpieces, including Van Gogh's 'The Starry Night,' Hokusai's 'The Great Wave,' and Edward Hopper's 'Nighthawks.' The goal is to explore the stories and emotions embedded in these works. Imaginae developed the project with Spanish AI filmmaker Hilario Abad.

James Duffen, who leads Imaginae Studios, described the series as an example of applying AI with deliberate craft and respect for source material. He suggested the technology enables forms of storytelling that weren't feasible before. Fremantle executive Andrea Scrosati added that the label is designed as a testing ground for creative teams to work with advanced AI tools.

'Art Awakens' is now available on YouTube, with broader distribution plans to be announced. Fremantle established the standalone AI label last year, committing to develop content while maintaining what it calls strict intellectual property standards. The company is positioning AI as an enhancement to conventional production, not a substitute for it, a distinction likely meant to preempt skepticism from creative industries wary of automation.
