Firefox Lets Users Flip the AI Switch Off - Here's Why That Matters

When Mozilla introduced an AI kill switch for Firefox, it took a path few other tech giants are willing to walk. CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo says the decision came directly from user feedback. "Our community was pretty vocal that not everyone wanted AI," he told me. The feature, now available on both mobile and desktop, lets users disable AI tools entirely or selectively.

So far, only 1% of Firefox users have turned AI off completely, and 3% have disabled some features. Enzor-DeMeo sees this as validation that choice matters - contrasting Firefox's approach with Microsoft's default Copilot integration and Google's silent AI model installations. "There's a general user sentiment of, 'Hey, I didn't ask for that,'" he said. Firefox's new Smart Window, currently in beta, takes a different tack: it lets you bring your own AI model, whether ChatGPT, Gemini, or a privately hosted open-source model.

Mozilla promises that your chats aren't used to train models, and you can delete data or turn off memory entirely. Enzor-DeMeo also noted that 83% of the world hasn't used AI, and only 3% of Americans pay for it. "Sometimes in the tech bubble, we get tunnel vision," he said. "If AI becomes more centered in the browser, you risk the internet becoming more closed off.

" Firefox's built-in VPN has already attracted 1. 5 million signups, with 800,000 active users - a sign, Enzor-DeMeo says, that privacy is an ethos-led priority. The browser's upcoming redesign, Project Nova, promises faster page loads (up to 9% improvement), visual upgrades like compact mode and rounded panels, and AI-powered tab grouping. With roughly 200 million monthly users and a 2% market share, Mozilla isn't chasing Chrome's 70%.

As Enzor-DeMeo put it: "Our objective is not to be the biggest browser; it's to keep the internet an equal playing field.
