Figma is broadening its backing for the open source Model Context Protocol (MCP) standard, which governs how AI agents link up with outside data sources and tools - even though co-founder Dylan Field has his doubts about the protocol itself.
At the design company's first Config conference in India, Figma unveiled 20 new MCP partners, among them Amp, ClickUp, Dia, Junie by JetBrains, Linear, Meta Muse, Mistral, Notion, OpenCode and Sarvam Agents.
Field's reservations are not new. Days before the announcement, one of MCP's co-creators raised objections about Figma not supporting the open-source tool Pi, and Field responded by noting that Anthropic, which created the MCP standard, does not expose artifacts or other cloud resources created via MCP. He wrote on X that the debate gets framed as open versus closed while questions of asymmetric context sharing go ignored. He later said Figma intends to support Pi.
Asked about the matter at a media briefing, Field said Figma is eager to open up its ecosystem but added that MCP has plenty of room for improvement and is weighted toward frontier labs. He also said he understands users who simply want a protocol for working with their Figma data, and that he wants them to have it.
Figma's CEO explained that the company avoids being fully open because the more data it exposes through MCP, the greater the risk of abuse, and said that while most users have no malicious intent, the company still has to weigh those risks.
