In a strategic push to adapt to a shifting market, ExpressVPN has introduced two new products aimed at specific user environments: a novel browser extension and a dedicated app for Meta Quest VR headsets. The announcements, first detailed by TechRadar, arrive as the VPN sector faces pressure from simpler privacy tools and consumer questions about the value of traditional services.
The browser extension is engineered to function in two distinct ways. It can operate as a standalone proxy, securing only traffic from the web browser itself. With a toggle, it can also connect to the main ExpressVPN desktop application to encrypt all data from the user's device. This design acknowledges that not every online activity requires full-system protection, offering a balance between speed and comprehensive security.
Separately, the company is releasing a native VPN application through the official Meta Quest Store. While users could previously attempt to install VPNs on these headsets, the process was often difficult. This official app secures all network data from the device, which is notable given the volume of personal information—movement, voice, environment mapping—collected in virtual reality.
These moves come during a period of consolidation in the VPN industry, where distinguishing one service from another often depends on supporting new platforms and refining the user experience. By addressing both everyday browsing and the emerging VR space, ExpressVPN is attempting to meet users in more places than many of its rivals currently do.
