The pharmaceutical industry is on the cusp of a significant milestone as Medicare prepares to cover obesity drugs for the first time. Eli Lilly, a leading player in the GLP-1 market, saw its stock rise on Thursday after analysts at Leerink raised their price target by 10%. The firm expects international sales of Lilly's obesity treatments to increase, and prescription momentum to pick up in the US when Medicare coverage begins on July 1. Lilly's oral GLP-1 treatment, Foundayo, and injectable Zepbound, will be available to eligible patients through a temporary program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge.
The company is also developing a pipeline of next-generation treatment options, including a combination of tirzepatide and eloralintide, which has been dubbed a potential 'game changer' by analysts. This combination therapy has shown promising results in mid-stage trials, with meaningful weight loss and good tolerability. As the obesity market continues to evolve, Lilly is well-positioned with a broad portfolio targeting specific patient populations. The company's highly effective weight-loss injection, retatrutide, and muscle-preserving medications are also expected to drive growth.
With two oral medications launched in the past seven months, the market is becoming increasingly competitive, but Lilly's strong portfolio and advertising campaigns are expected to help the company catch up. As Medicare coverage begins, the industry will be watching closely to see how the market develops over the next few years.
