Shares of The Walt Disney Company continued a downward trend this week, slipping nearly 2% Tuesday following the formal announcement that Josh D'Amaro, the executive who leads its theme parks and resorts, will succeed Bob Iger as Chief Executive Officer. This came after a 7% drop on Monday, which coincided with the release of the company's fiscal first-quarter results.

The financial picture was mixed. Disney's overall revenue climbed 5% year-over-year to approximately $26 billion, a figure that surpassed analyst forecasts. The standout performance came from D'Amaro's division, Disney Experiences, which posted quarterly revenue exceeding $10 billion for the first time ever, driven by its global parks, resorts, and cruise lines.

Despite this strength, investor focus has been fixed on leadership. Iger's planned departure marks the company's second attempt to install a permanent successor. Bob Chapek, chosen in 2020, was ousted in late 2022, leading to Iger's return. Analysts from Jefferies and Bank of America had noted that uncertainty around the transition was weighing on the stock.

In a statement Monday, Iger expressed confidence, saying D'Amaro would inherit a strong company with clear opportunities for growth. Bank of America analysts suggested the choice of D'Amaro, given the financial heft of the Experiences unit he built, would likely be viewed positively by investors over time. The immediate market reaction, however, reflected lingering caution as Disney prepares for its next chapter under a new leader, during a period of significant economic and regulatory shifts under the second Trump administration.
