Cybercrime Surges in Asia-Pacific as Scammers Leverage AI and Ransomware

A recent report from INTERPOL reveals a significant increase in cybercrime across the Asia-Pacific region, driven by the rapid adoption of digital technologies and the growing sophistication of cybercriminal networks. According to the report, phishing has become the most prevalent and financially damaging form of cybercrime, with over 10,000 cases reported in a third of the region's countries between January 2024 and March 2025. The region's rapid digitalization, coupled with a lack of cybersecurity maturity, has created an environment in which cybercriminals can thrive. INTERPOL's Cybercrime Director, Neal Jetton, notes that cybercriminals are using artificial intelligence, ransomware-as-a-service models, and social engineering techniques to carry out attacks on a large scale.

The report highlights a surge in ransomware attacks, as well as scams that use deepfakes and AI to impersonate business executives and authorize fraudulent transactions. The real estate, manufacturing, and financial services sectors have been particularly affected, with over 135,000 ransomware-related attacks reported in 2024. To combat this growing threat, law enforcement organizations across the region are increasing their efforts to collaborate and share information, with support from INTERPOL. This includes coordinating operations against cybercriminal infrastructure, conducting joint investigations, and providing specialized training to improve cyber resilience.

The report's findings underscore the need for businesses and individuals to be vigilant and take steps to protect themselves against these increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
