Court Halts Perplexity's AI Shopping Agent on Amazon

A federal judge in San Francisco has temporarily blocked Perplexity AI from using its Comet browser to make purchases on Amazon. The ruling, reported by Bloomberg, grants Amazon a preliminary injunction in its ongoing dispute with the AI firm. Perplexity has one week to appeal.

Judge Maxine Chesney found that Amazon presented compelling evidence that Perplexity's Comet browser accesses users' password-protected Amazon accounts. While the tool operates with a customer's permission, the court determined it does so without authorization from Amazon itself. Perplexity is now ordered to cease accessing any secured areas of Amazon's systems and to destroy its copies of Amazon's data while litigation proceeds.

An Amazon spokesperson stated the injunction is necessary to protect the integrity of its marketplace and ensure a reliable experience for customers. The conflict began last November when Amazon sent a cease-and-desist letter, arguing that automated purchases via Comet violate its terms of service.

Perplexity has vowed to contest the decision. A company representative said they will continue to advocate for the right of internet users to select their preferred AI tools. The temporary order stands as the two companies prepare their full legal arguments.
