A new and expensive service is emerging in corporate boardrooms: organizational design for artificial intelligence. Major consulting firms, including McKinsey, IBM, Deloitte, and Accenture, are advising clients to construct traditional management hierarchies - complete with supervisors, reporting lines, and performance reviews - for their AI software agents.

The proposition arrives as businesses invest heavily in autonomous agents capable of executing multi-step tasks. With Gartner predicting agentic AI will be embedded in a third of enterprise software by 2028, consultants see a prime opportunity. Their argument is that a coming "digital workforce" requires the same oversight as human teams, a vision that can justify multi-million dollar strategy engagements.

Yet evidence from early adopters suggests a different reality. Companies like Salesforce, Microsoft, and ServiceNow, which have deployed AI agents at scale, rely on precise engineering, not corporate ladder-building. Their agents operate within strict, task-specific boundaries, using clear rules and human approval gates. The effective governance model resembles a robust software architecture, not an org chart.

This creates a pivotal question for executives: is the push for AI middle management a necessary evolution or a premature solution? Critics argue that applying human resource concepts to deterministic software adds needless complexity. The core requirement is not a supervisor, but well-defined parameters, reliable data, and systematic monitoring.

While future, more advanced agents may present genuine coordination challenges, that horizon remains years away for most. For now, the rush to institutionalize AI may say less about technological necessity and more about the consulting industry's knack for selling comfort in the face of rapid change.
