In a decisive bipartisan vote, the House of Representatives has approved a legislative package designed to help America's small businesses harness artificial intelligence. The two bills, passed on January 20, 2026, would task the Small Business Administration with providing practical AI education and resources to entrepreneurs across the country.
The centerpiece, the AI for Main Street Act, passed with overwhelming support, 395-14. Its companion, the AI-WISE Act, cleared by voice vote. Both proposals now move to the Senate, where similar legislation has already been introduced, signaling a clear path forward.
The effort addresses a growing technological divide. While large corporations invest heavily in AI, many smaller firms lack the capital or expertise to adopt it effectively and safely. The legislation aims to level the playing field by mobilizing the national network of over 900 Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs). These centers would become hubs for AI guidance, offering training on everything from cybersecurity to using AI for inventory management and customer service.
"This is about giving a family-owned business the same opportunity to compete as a Fortune 500 company," said Rep. Mark Alford (R-Mo.), a lead sponsor. The measures would not create new spending but instead direct the SBA to use existing funds and infrastructure.
Supporters argue the timing is critical. A recent SBA report found that while adoption is growing rapidly, many small firms are not yet capturing the full value of AI tools. The proposed online learning modules and one-on-one counseling are intended to close that gap, offering neutral education developed with experts from agencies like the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
With backing from both parties and alignment with private sector initiatives like Google's AI U program, the bills represent a rare consensus in Washington: that empowering small businesses with technology is essential for economic competitiveness in 2026 and beyond.
