In a move that brings stability to the commercial AI sector, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have each stated that Anthropic's Claude AI will remain available for their business customers. This clarification follows a contentious decision by the Pentagon to label Anthropic a supply chain risk, a designation typically applied to foreign firms.
The dispute stemmed from Anthropic's refusal to lift two contractual safeguards for military use: a ban on deploying Claude for mass domestic surveillance of Americans and a prohibition on powering fully autonomous weapons without human oversight. When the company missed a deadline to remove these restrictions, President Trump ordered federal agencies to cease using its technology. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the supply chain risk designation on February 27, 2026.
Legal teams at the three cloud providers, which collectively control about 65% of global cloud infrastructure spending, reviewed the order. They concluded it applies narrowly to direct contracts with the Department of War. Microsoft confirmed Claude's availability through platforms like M365 and GitHub for all other customers. Google and Amazon issued similar statements, with Google noting its substantial multi-billion dollar investment in Anthropic remains intact.
The practical impact is significant for defense contractors. Lockheed Martin has pledged to remove Claude from its operations, and several venture-backed firms are switching to alternatives. However, in a striking contradiction, the Pentagon continued using Claude for operational planning and targeting in military actions against Iran, citing deep integration into its systems.
Meanwhile, consumer adoption of Claude has skyrocketed. In early March 2026, its mobile app surpassed ChatGPT in daily downloads, with daily active users jumping 183% since the start of the year. Anthropic's revenue run-rate hit $14 billion, cementing its status as a historically fast-growing company.
Anthropic plans to challenge the Pentagon's designation in court, arguing it sets a dangerous precedent. For now, the unified response from the cloud sector provides a clear path: Claude remains a tool for innovation everywhere except within specific defense contracts.
