The U.S. government has cleared the way for foreign access to Anthropic's most advanced artificial intelligence systems, reversing a sudden export ban that had blocked users worldwide. The company announced late Tuesday that Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 will be available again starting tomorrow, after the Department of Commerce removed its export controls.
In a letter to Anthropic, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the company no longer needs an export license. The decision came after Anthropic agreed to actively identify and fix security risks linked to the models, collaborate with the government on safety standards for future releases, and report any malicious activity. The company thanked users for their patience and praised everyone involved in getting the models back online.
The restrictions were imposed last month by the Trump administration, which ordered Anthropic to block all foreign nationals - including its own employees - from using Fable 5 and Mythos 5. At the time, the company said officials cited vague national security concerns, though it suspected the government was worried about vulnerabilities in Fable 5. On Friday, Anthropic added that it had received approval to supply the models to U.S. organizations managing critical infrastructure, and it is now working with officials to restore full public access.
