A Chinese AI startup has just shaken up the open-source world with a model that dwarfs everything else on the market. Moonshot AI, based in Beijing, released Kimi K3 this week - a massive 2.8 trillion-parameter system that the company is calling the largest open-source AI model ever built.
The model, which features a context window of 1 million tokens, was designed to tackle long-term programming tasks, complex reasoning, and intelligent information retrieval. In internal tests, Kimi K3 outperformed every other open-source system it was compared against, though it still trails behind the most powerful closed-source models like Claude Fable 5 and GPT 5.6 Sol in overall performance.
Moonshot AI says Kimi K3 marks a major milestone for open-source AI, offering researchers and developers a tool that can handle demanding, long-horizon challenges without the restrictions of proprietary systems. The release underscores how quickly China's AI ecosystem is advancing - and how open-source models are closing the gap with their closed-source rivals.
