Cerebras Systems' stock price plummeted nearly 20% on Wednesday, despite the company's impressive first-quarter earnings report. The AI chipmaker's forecast of a narrower gross margin for the year, ranging from 38% to 41%, caught investors off guard. This guidance was significantly lower than the 47% margin reported in the first quarter, leading to a sharp decline in the company's stock value. In an interview with CNBC, CEO Andrew Feldman attributed the stock's poor performance to a misunderstanding of the company's margin guidance.

According to Feldman, Cerebras will need to rent back equipment from one of its largest customers, which will temporarily impact profit margins. This strategic decision aims to increase capacity sooner, as the company builds out its data center capacity. The move will allow Cerebras to deploy its systems more quickly, but at a short-term cost to its bottom line. Despite the margin concerns, Cerebras' first-quarter earnings report showed significant revenue growth, reaching $193 million, a 94% increase year-over-year.

The company also narrowed its net loss to $14 million, down from $23. 9 million in the same period last year. As investors reassess their expectations, Cerebras' stock has hit a new low, nearing its initial public offering price.
