California Drivers Take Gas Stations to Court Over Alleged AI-Driven Price Gouging

A group of California drivers has filed a lawsuit against several major gas station operators, including BP, Circle K, and 7-Eleven, accusing them of using artificial intelligence to artificially inflate gas prices. The lawsuit, filed in a Sacramento federal court, claims that the defendants used an AI-powered tool from a company called Kalibrate to coordinate high prices and maximize profits. This alleged scheme is said to have violated California's Cartwright Act and a newly enacted law aimed at preventing algorithmic price fixing. The drivers claim that gas prices have surged by as much as 30 cents per gallon in areas where a high percentage of stations use the Kalibrate tool, resulting in 'astronomical' prices that sometimes reach $7 per gallon.

With Californians already paying the highest gas prices in the nation, averaging $5. 58 per gallon, the lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for drivers who have overpaid for gasoline. The defendants operate over 1,700 gas stations in California and have either declined to comment or did not respond to requests for comment. The case highlights concerns over the potential misuse of AI in commercial settings and the need for greater transparency and regulation to protect consumers.
