Broadcom shares jumped 5% Thursday following a confident presentation from CEO Hock Tan, who projected the company's AI chip revenue will soar past $100 billion by 2027. This forecast, delivered alongside strong quarterly earnings, exceeded even the most optimistic Wall Street expectations and signaled Tan's belief in durable demand for custom AI processors.

The company reported its AI-related revenue more than doubled last quarter, driven by accelerators and networking gear. Tan assured analysts that Broadcom has locked in critical memory and wafer supplies through 2028, addressing concerns about component shortages that have plagued the sector. He also emphasized that the company's production efficiency now ensures profitability on AI products aligns with its broader semiconductor business.

While some investors worry that cloud giants designing their own chips could threaten Broadcom, Tan argued the opposite. He stated that the intense competition in AI, particularly against dominant player Nvidia, forces companies to seek the best possible silicon, not just 'good enough' alternatives. This environment, he suggested, secures Broadcom's role for the foreseeable future.

The report had ripple effects across the tech sector. Credo and Amphenol shares rose sharply on indications that copper-based connectivity - a Broadcom strength - is being favored over newer optical technology for linking AI servers. Conversely, optical component makers Lumentum and Coherent saw their shares decline.
