Boston Dynamics, the pioneering robotics firm behind the Spot and Atlas robots, is undergoing a significant leadership transition. CEO Robert Playter is stepping down after 30 years with the company, a move announced in an internal memo this week. Chief Financial Officer Amanda McMaster will serve as interim CEO during the search for a permanent successor.
Playter's departure marks the end of an influential chapter. He joined Boston Dynamics in its early days, rising through roles in engineering and operations before becoming CEO in 2020. Under his leadership, the company evolved from a research-focused lab into a commercial entity, launching the quadruped Spot robot and recently unveiling its next-generation Atlas humanoid.
In a statement, Boston Dynamics credited Playter as an industry icon. "Robert Playter is an icon of the global robotics industry," the company said. "From the earliest days of hopping robots to spearheading the entire humanoid industry, Playter made his mark as a pioneer of innovation. He will be sorely missed."
The company, founded in 1992 as an MIT spinoff, has been owned by Hyundai since 2021 following previous acquisitions by Alphabet and SoftBank. Playter's exit concludes a tenure that saw the company's most famous machines move from viral video sensations to products in the global market.
