Robert Playter is leaving Boston Dynamics, the pioneering robotics company announced Tuesday. His departure, effective immediately, concludes a 30-year tenure that saw the company evolve from an MIT research lab into an industry leader.

Playter served as CEO for the past six years, a period marked by significant transitions. He guided the company through its 2021 acquisition by Hyundai from SoftBank and oversaw the launch of a new, all-electric Atlas humanoid robot last year. Just days ago, the company released fresh footage of its research Atlas models performing complex gymnastic maneuvers and navigating outdoor terrain, even as more commercial versions begin production.

Chief Financial Officer Amanda McMaster will step in as interim CEO while the board searches for a permanent successor. The leadership change comes as Boston Dynamics moves toward a major commercial milestone: deploying Atlas robots in Hyundai automotive plants starting in 2028. The company faces a newly competitive field, with rivals from Tesla and Figure to AI firms developing advanced "world model" technology for machines.

In a letter to staff, Playter reflected on his journey. "Boston Dynamics has been the ride of a lifetime. What this place has become has exceeded anything I could have ever imagined all those years ago in our funky lab in the basement of the MIT Media Lab," he wrote, pointing to successes with the Spot, Stretch, and Atlas robot lines.

Company VP Nikolas Noel credited Playter with transforming a small R&D lab into the global leader in mobile robotics. "From the earliest days of hopping robots to spearheading the entire humanoid industry, Playter made his mark as a pioneer of innovation," Noel stated. "He will be sorely missed, but we hope he enjoys some well-deserved time off."
