Bezos' Prometheus Startup Lays Out Plan to Build an 'Artificial General Engineer'

Jeff Bezos' latest venture, Prometheus, is starting to take shape. The startup, which Bezos co-leads as co-CEO with Vik Bajaj, has been raising eyebrows since its November announcement. Back then, the company described its mission as "physical AI" - applying deep learning to robotics and manufacturing - but offered few specifics. Now, with a fresh $12 billion funding round, Bezos and Bajaj are opening up about their ambitions.

The round, which values Prometheus at $41 billion, includes investments from JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, and Bezos himself. The startup currently employs 150 people. Much of the capital will go toward compute power. "What we're doing is very compute-intensive and we need to create that data," Bezos told CNBC.

So what's the big idea? Bezos describes Prometheus' core focus as building an "artificial general engineer" - a set of tools designed to accelerate the cycle of invention. "All societal wealth is driven by invention," he told The New York Times. "Six thousand years ago, somebody invented the plow, and we all got wealthier. ... What Prometheus seeks to do is to offer a set of tools that dramatically accelerates that invention loop."

For business leaders tracking AI infrastructure, Prometheus signals a major bet on compute-heavy systems that bridge digital models with physical processes. The startup's approach could reshape how industries prototype, test, and deploy new technologies.
