Last week's biggest news was AWS signing a definitive agreement to acquire DuckLabs, the Amsterdam-based company behind DuckDB, the popular open-source analytical database that runs in-process and executes SQL directly against files like Parquet, CSV, and JSON. DuckDB will remain open source under its independent foundation and the MIT license. AWS plans to combine DuckDB's speed on everyday queries with the enterprise scale of services like Amazon S3, Amazon Redshift, and Amazon Athena. Co-founders Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt will continue leading technical direction.

In other launches, Amazon ECS now automatically detects and recovers container instances that lose agent connectivity, surfacing a new AGENT_CONNECTIVITY health event across Fargate, Managed Instances, and EC2. AWS Lambda introduced public preview runtimes, starting with Node.js 26 and Python 3.15, allowing early testing before general availability. AWS IoT Core added a native InfluxDB rule action for routing time-series data without custom code. Amazon GameLift Servers now includes enhanced DDoS protection against layers 3 and 4 attacks at no extra cost. Amazon SageMaker HyperPod expanded support for Ray, with built-in observability and resilient training.

Also notable: Amazon EC2 celebrated its 20th birthday, growing from a single instance type to over 1,200 across 39 Regions. AWS contributed feedback to Agentic Resource Discovery (ARD), an open specification (Apache 2.0) for describing and discovering agentic resources across clouds and SaaS platforms. The Agent Toolkit for AWS is now available via a single AWS CLI command, equipping AI coding agents with curated AWS knowledge and secure API access.

Upcoming events include AWS Summits in Zurich (September 2), São Paulo (September 3), Tel Aviv (September 10), and Dubai (September 30), plus Community Days in Tokyo (September 5) and Warsaw (September 8).
