AWS Lambda has introduced MicroVMs, a new serverless compute capability that enables businesses to run user-generated or AI-created code in isolated, stateful environments. This innovation addresses the growing need for multi-tenant applications to provide dedicated execution environments for each end-user, ensuring the safe execution of untrusted code. MicroVMs offer virtual machine-level isolation, near-instant launch and resume, and direct control over environment lifecycle and state, all without requiring infrastructure management or expertise in complex virtualization technologies. Powered by Firecracker, the same technology that supports AWS Lambda Functions, MicroVMs provide a seamless and secure experience for developers.
With MicroVMs, businesses can build applications that require isolated execution environments, such as AI coding assistants, interactive code environments, and data analytics platforms, without compromising on performance or security. The service is now available in several regions, including US East, US West, Europe, and Asia Pacific, with support for up to 16 vCPUs, 32 GB of memory, and 32 GB of disk per MicroVM. To get started, developers can visit the AWS Lambda console or explore the Lambda MicroVMs product page for more information.
