Australia Tightens Grip on Social Media Giants with Hefty Fines

The Australian government is ramping up its efforts to keep children off social media, with plans to double the penalty for breaches of the country's youth social media ban to a staggering $99 million. This move comes as the government accuses tech giants of not doing enough to prevent minors from accessing their platforms. Despite the introduction of the world's first social media ban for under-16s, research suggests that the majority of children in this age group are still finding ways to bypass age restrictions and access social media. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his concerns, stating that while there has been progress, big tech companies are not taking sufficient measures to comply with the law.

The proposed reforms will not only increase the penalty for systematic breaches but also grant the eSafety commissioner greater powers to gather information and evidence from social media companies, including the ability to demand documents from third-party providers. This development is part of a broader global movement, with countries like France, the UK, and others considering similar legislation to protect children online. However, a recent study found that over 80% of under-16s are still using social media, highlighting the challenges in enforcing such bans. The government remains committed to holding big tech accountable, with Communications Minister Anika Wells emphasizing that social media platforms must do more to exclude under-16s and that the government will not back down in its efforts to uphold the ban.
