Astera Labs delivered a fourth-quarter financial report that surpassed Wall Street's official forecasts, yet its stock tumbled roughly 10% in after-hours trading. The decline appears driven by a nuanced disappointment: while revenue soared 92% year-over-year to $271 million, beating the $250 million consensus, it fell short of more optimistic analyst projections hovering above $280 million.
The semiconductor firm, which provides critical connectivity hardware for AI data centers, posted earnings of 58 cents per share against an expected 51 cents. Net income jumped to $45 million. Furthermore, the company's first-quarter revenue guidance of $286 million to $297 million comfortably exceeds current market expectations.
CEO Jitendra Mohan stated the company's growth is fueled by demand for its connectivity solutions, which he identifies as the new bottleneck in AI infrastructure. "The bottleneck is shifting from compute to connectivity, and that's where we play," Mohan said, noting that products like its Scorpio switches and Taurus cables now drive 30% of total revenue.
Alongside earnings, Astera announced a significant executive shift. CFO Mike Tate will step down on March 2, succeeded by Rambus finance chief Desmond Lynch. Tate will remain as a strategic advisor. The company also disclosed a new warrant allowing Amazon to purchase up to $466 million in stock, deepening a key partnership.
In a move addressing what Mohan called a primary constraint, Astera is establishing a research and development center in Israel to access new engineering talent. "We are bottlenecked by the availability of resources," he explained. Founded in 2017 by ex-Texas Instruments executives, Astera Labs counts Nvidia, AMD, and Intel among its core customers.
