In a move that accelerates a new era of connectivity, U.S. regulators have given AST SpaceMobile the green light to build a constellation of up to 4,000 satellites. The FCC's authorization, granted in late 2024, sets the Texas company on a path to create a space-based network designed to work with everyday smartphones.

The system aims to fill dead zones in cellular coverage by beaming service directly from orbit, eliminating the need for specialized hardware. AST SpaceMobile has already forged agreements with major carriers like AT&T and Verizon, potentially putting the technology within reach of hundreds of millions of customers. Their satellites, which use unusually large antennas to connect with standard devices, will operate in low Earth orbit.

This approval places AST SpaceMobile in a direct race with other satellite ventures, notably SpaceX's Starlink, which is also developing direct-to-cell services. While the technical and financial challenges of launching thousands of satellites are immense, the company plans initial commercial service starting in 2025. If successful, the network could begin reshaping global mobile coverage by the end of the decade, connecting remote areas that have long been beyond the reach of traditional cell towers.
