The US government's ban on Anthropic's Mythos and Fable 5 has created an opportunity for Asian AI startups to launch their own models. Chinese cybersecurity firm 360 has unveiled Tulongfeng, a tool that can detect software vulnerabilities, while Tokyo-based Sakana AI has launched Fugu, a model that can orchestrate access to other models through their APIs. Sakana AI claims that Fugu is on par with leading models like Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos Preview. The launch of these models comes as the US government's ban on Anthropic's models enters its third week.

Sakana AI says that the release of Fugu was coincidental, but the company is capitalizing on the moment by advertising its model as a way to deliver frontier capability without the risk of export controls. The company's co-founder, Ren Ito, has urged the US government to prioritize access to AI for its closest allies, arguing that AI should be developed together, not hoarded. Meanwhile, 360's founder, Zhou Hongyi, has described vulnerability-finding AI as a national strategic asset and warned of the risk of one-way transparency. The launch of these models is a significant development in the AI industry, as local alternatives are filling the gap left by US companies.

Even if the US ban is lifted, it may be challenging for US companies to regain the trust of Asian enterprise customers.
