Apple reported its most profitable quarter ever on January 29, 2026, with revenue soaring to $143.8 billion. The 16% year-over-year jump was powered by what CEO Tim Cook called “simply staggering” demand for the iPhone 17. The device alone generated $85.3 billion in sales, a 23% increase that reversed a recent slump and far exceeded analyst predictions.
The surge was particularly pronounced in Greater China, where sales leapt 38% to $25.53 billion. Cook noted record numbers of customers in mainland China upgrading their devices, a significant rebound for a market where Apple has faced stiff local competition. This growth helped push Apple’s global active device base to 2.5 billion, a key metric for the company’s future services business.
Those high-margin services, including Apple TV and the App Store, also set a record at $30.01 billion in revenue. The company’s financial engine is humming: operating cash flow reached $53.9 billion, funding $32 billion in shareholder returns. Gross margins expanded to 48.2%, even as research and development spending climbed sharply to nearly $11 billion, reflecting heavy investment in artificial intelligence.
Looking forward, Apple expects continued strength, forecasting revenue growth between 13% and 16% for the current quarter. Executives acknowledged, however, that meeting this demand is a challenge. The company is contending with supply constraints for advanced chips and rising memory costs, pressures linked to the global scramble for AI infrastructure. These results arrive as the tech giant navigates a complex global environment, including ongoing tariff costs and a strategic push to diversify its supply chain into regions like India.
For now, the numbers tell a clear story: the iPhone 17 has triggered a powerful upgrade cycle, proving the enduring appeal of Apple’s flagship product and setting a formidable baseline for its ambitious AI initiatives.
