A significant change may be on the horizon for Apple's chip development. According to a report by Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, the company is considering a major deviation from its traditional silicon strategy. Sources close to the matter indicate that Apple will forgo the release of Pro and Max versions of its upcoming M6 chip, instead opting to fast-track the development of the M7 generation. This move would mark a first for the company, as it has always offered multiple tiers of its in-house silicon.
The M7 chips are expected to prioritize on-device artificial intelligence processing, a focus that aligns with the company's emphasis on AI and Siri during its WWDC keynote earlier this year. By skipping the more powerful M6 variants, Apple could potentially release the M7 as early as the first half of 2027, followed by M7 Max and Pro chips later in the year. Additionally, an M7 Ultra model may arrive in 2028, according to Gurman's sources. This strategic shift raises questions about the potential delay of Apple's rumored touchscreen laptop, which was initially expected to feature the M6 chip.
With the M5 Pro and Max chips already introduced, and the M6 anticipated for entry-level MacBooks by the end of 2026, Apple's decision to pivot to the M7 generation could have significant implications for the company's product roadmap and its commitment to advancing AI capabilities.
