The long-rumored Apple smart home display, often described as a HomePod with a built-in screen, has been pushed back again. According to industry sources, the device is now expected to arrive this autumn. This follows a report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who corroborated information shared last week by leaker Kosutami. The delay appears to be tied to the development schedule of a significant AI upgrade for Siri.

Gurman's reporting indicates the hardware, internally referenced as J490, is functionally complete but is being held for the launch of a more conversational, chatbot-style Siri. This AI enhancement was initially projected for an earlier release but is now slated for a broader rollout later this year. The update is considered a foundational element for several upcoming Apple products.

The device itself is described as featuring a seven-inch display, a silver aluminum enclosure, a USB-C port, and a custom version of tvOS. Its introduction is part of a coordinated smart home push from Apple, which also includes refreshed HomePod speakers, an updated Apple TV 4K, and a new environmental sensor. A more ambitious product, a home robot with a robotic arm, remains further out, with a potential 2027 launch window.

Ultimately, Apple's strategy suggests it will not release new smart home hardware until its revamped virtual assistant is ready to power the experience, making Siri's capabilities the critical path for its autumn lineup.
